How do I stop payment on First Commonwealth Bank?
There are three easy ways to set up a stop payment. Visit us in person at any of our community offices, call us at 800-711-BANK (2265) or use online banking. Once you're logged in to online banking, go to the account transaction page for the account on which you need to place the stop payment.
- Open the CommBank app and tap on Help in the top right.
- Use Search to find 'Uncollected payments'
- Select the payment that you want to cancel, then select Cancel payment, then Yes, cancel payment.
Once a transaction appears as pending on your account, you're unable to stop or cancel the transaction. If you don't recognise a transaction or did not authorise it, you can raise a dispute.
In general, if the transfer has not yet been processed, it may be possible to cancel it. You can typically do this by contacting the bank or service provider's customer service team and requesting the cancellation.
If you have online or mobile banking, simply log in, tap into your account, and select “Transaction Dispute.” You can also contact your local office or our Engagement Center at 800-711-BANK (2265).

Ask the merchant or retailer to reverse the charge, cancel the sale or release the hold for the confirmed amount. The sooner you can reach out to the merchant, the more likely the pending transaction can be canceled. If you suspect fraud, skip the merchant and call your bank or card issuer first.
In most cases, once a bank transfer has been made, it can't be cancelled as the funds are usually transferred immediately. However, you should contact your bank as soon as possible if you need to cancel a bank transfer. If the payment hasn't been processed, they may be able to stop it.
You can typically do this by contacting the bank or service provider's customer service team and requesting the cancellation. They may ask you to provide specific information about the transfer, such as the transaction number or recipient's details, to verify your identity and the transfer details.
The chargeback process lets you ask your bank to refund a payment on your debit card when a purchase has gone wrong. You should contact the seller first, as you cannot start a chargeback claim unless you have done this.
Can I stop an automatic payment through my bank?
You can contact your bank and place a stop payment order on the recurring transaction. Generally, a stop payment order is only good for six months. To stop payment, you will need to notify your bank at least three business days before the next payment is scheduled to be made. Notice may be made orally or in writing.
If you cancel within 30 minutes of payment, you will be issued a full refund. For cancellations made after 30 minutes and up to 180 days, you will be issued a refund for the send amount only, excluding fees.
How do I stop a pending debit transaction? You can stop a pending debit card transaction by contacting the merchant and canceling the purchase. Or you can try contacting your bank if you don't recognize the transaction, you suspect fraud is involved, or the merchant is unresponsive.
If you paid by bank transfer or Direct Debit
Contact your bank immediately to let them know what's happened and ask if you can get a refund. Most banks should reimburse you if you've transferred money to someone because of a scam.
Did a scammer make an unauthorized transfer from your bank account? Contact your bank and tell them it was an unauthorized debit or withdrawal. Ask them to reverse the transaction and give you your money back.
- Select the account the stop payment is associated with.
- Choose Account services, then Stop payments within the “Payments” section.
- Select Stop payment history below “View or cancel existing stop payment requests”.
While some banks will be able to cancel an ACH payment over the phone or online, others may require you to submit a form requesting the cancellation. Recurring ACH debit payments are able to be cancelled, but you must do so at least three business days before the payment is due.
Canceling a completed payment immediately is generally not an option because the other party already has the money. When you authorize a payment to a merchant, you agree to make a purchase for a specified amount. Once an order is placed, it's not possible to change the payment amount or number of items purchased.
To withdraw consent, simply tell whoever issued your card (the bank, building society or credit card company) that you don't want the payment to be made. You can tell the card issuer by phone, email or letter. Your card issuer has no right to insist that you ask the company taking the payment first.
Contact the Merchant: Reach out to the merchant or company charging your card. You can usually find their contact information on your billing statement, their website, or in your online account with them. Request to cancel the automatic payments.

Due to security reasons, you're unable to delete or remove any transactions.
Your bank and the recipient's bank will need to co-operate to try to recover the payment. This usually involves the recipient's bank contacting the account holder to ask his or her permission to reverse the transaction. If the recipient refuses, your only option is to take up the matter directly yourself.
Seek Assistance from Your Bank: Contact your bank and inform them about the wrong transaction. Provide them with all the necessary details and documentation. They can help initiate the chargeback process to recover the transferred funds.
If the transaction has already been authorized it will still clear, regardless of if you freeze or lock your card.
