eWillys | Your source for Jeep and Willys deals, mods and more (1)Steve Elkins filed this report from Portola’s Railroad Days.

Portola, California, is rich with railroad history, as the town grew up around the WP Railroad yard. It’s the home of the Western Pacific RR active from 1903 until 1983 when WP merged with Union Pacific. WP was the last major railroad completed into California, eventually running from Salt Lake City, Utah to Oakland, CA. The significance of this location is that their tracks cross the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at the lowest point, near Beckwourth Pass (5,200′). There’s less climbing for the trains, and there’s less snow to hinder the railroad in Winter; unlike the Southern Pacific RR route, crossing the mountains further South near Lake Tahoe (7,100′). Western Pacific is known as the “Feather River” Route, following the Feather River West of Portola into the Sacramento Valley, then turns toward the San Francisco Bay Area.

In celebration of the railroad town’s heritage, Portola held their annual Railroad Days last weekend. There were three days of activities, including a car show and shine, and a parade. Here are photos of the three Willys that participated, two traveling from Nevada.

Mellouise owns that nice M-38. She and her husband enjoys visiting the e-Willys website and driving the M-38 as her summer car around town for general transportation. “Mel” and two of her friends joined the parade in her well kept Jeep.

Mel is looking for a rear seat for her M-38. If you know of one, contact me at willys57@sbcglobal.net and I will pass the information on to her.

That’s one nice early 1950 Sedan Delivery, my favorite kind of Willys (I just bought another Parkway last week.) And that’s a beautiful pickup, apparently owned by the same family. I didn’t get a chance to meet them. I know that’s unlike me, but I had trains on the brain, spending most of the weekend at the RR Museum; a live museum with lots of action this weekend. I had just enough time to enjoy talking with Mel about her Jeep, then take a few snapshots and run off to the activities.

It’s a project.

“Jeep FC170 pickup truck. This is a project truck. Very good body for its age. Also being sold is a 1959 chases with rebuilt engine. I purchased these two units with the intention of restoring, but have not had the time or money. I also have some rough sheet metal that goes with the lot. The rebuilt engine has not been started and I did not perform the rebuild. The original truck does not run and there is no title.”

UPDATE: Was on eBay. **SOLD**

Needs work.

“I bought this last spring from the estate of a guy that owned a trucking company here. He had this at his ranch for years and just used it for fencing in the rough country and in the summer had a fire fighting outfit that he slid in the box. I doubt that it was off his place more than a dozen times in all the years he owned it. He died and I bought this and a Willys pickup, a 58, that I also have for sale.

The son told me they hadn’t started this since Don died and maybe a couple years before that as he was sick for quite awhile. But the tires were up, it had a 5 year old battery in it and cranked right over once we replaced the battery and got some gas to the carb. The engine runs great, smooth and quiet, oil pressure is good. Radiator had antifreeze, etc. The only real problems were that the carb leaked gas pretty bad and the choke cable was sticky. I got a kit to rebuild the carb and will do that before this leaves or include the kit, what ever you want. It has NO brakes. Haven’t fooled with them. I’ve just been driving it around the ranch, don’t need brakes.

The is probably as close to an original, rust free 1960 FC as you are ever going to find. The cab corners are good, the floors are good — some surface rust but not much else – the box is solid, the rear bumper is solid and protected the fenders, etc. Tires are pretty nasty, you’ll need new ones. It has a couple extra wheels with it.

Its going to need some work, it has a couple dents here and there including the driver’s door one they all have and fair smack on the side of the cab roof. Not hard to fix but it is there.

AS near as I can tell it is almost totally original, they added an alternator and cut the engine hump a little to make clearance, the floor mats are worn out and there is a rip in one seat. The windshield is good, which doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Drivers side window is plexiglas or something. Not glass.

Take a look at the photos and see what you think. Jump in and bid or hit the buy it now. Shipping out of Montana is not all that expensive to most places, you can probably ship this anywhere in the US for under $1000. Or hook up your trailer and come get it. I will never have time to do anything with it, I have half a dozen Willys pickups and Jeeps and need to thin the herd. Doing up a CJ2A with my 15 year old in her school colors, that’s taking about all the time I have for old Jeeps.

I have a clear current Montana title in my name along with a set of Montana personalized plates that say 60FC170. I got those when I thought I was going to get it running and driving this summer.

Some of these photos were taken the day I got it, I’ve cleaned it up some since then. If you want more photos you can email me and I’ll try to get them to you.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $9000.

The body looks like it is a 3A front with a CJ-5 rear.

“1953 Willys CJ3A, I think I am the 3rd owner. I have owned it for 23 years or so. It has less than 500 miles on a frame off rebuild. Frame was sandblasted, industrial enamel painted, springs re-arched and rebuilt. Engine 60 HP L head, had crank and cam align-board, freeze plugs replaced, bearings and seals, pistons, rings, and rods, new oil pump, valves and seats, distributor bushing, clutch pres. plate, pilot bushing, throwout bearing, total rebuild of trans, including synchromesh, and all bearings.

Transfer case bearings and mainshaft, rearends, u-joints, all steering knuckles, bendix drive joints, wheel bearings, new lockout hubs, rebuilt steering box and rebushed steering column, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, replaced all brake lines, upgrade to 11 in. brakes and brake kit (springs, etc.), drums, (5) new tires, and wheels. Original radiator rodded out and cleaned. Has soft top and doors, bikini top, roll cage, fold and tuck rear seat, Lincoln electric bucket seats, but have original seats also (see photo). Has 12V. 3-wire alternator, new battery. Is key start and has brushes replaced and armature turned in starter. Original metal body (branded) fenders and hood. No dents (to speak of). Did not do any body and paint because I wanted to use it in the desert, and had I done so, my wife would not want it “scratched”. Has been garaged with all 3 owners. I have many of the old parts that were replaced. ”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1000

Glenn spotted this. He wrote, Bet you’re wondering why this relates to DJ3A? This Indy located parts car might help with some very hard to find stuff such as 15″ four stud wheels, most brake parts, and probably more. These wheels are not a perfect match to the DJ3A wheel, but work perfectly and accept the big W hub caps. This is up for best offer and sounds like you can tell the seller to keep his engine etc. When you’re done pickin’ Willys Goodies, you still have first edition Nash Rambler stuff to sell.
